Head of Human Resources


Our client, a highly successful, prominent, award-winning, privately-held, real estate owner, manager, and developer of Class A and Workforce properties across the Mid-Atlantic region.  The company has an impressive portfolio which is well-maintained with a high standard/tradition level of excellence. This stable portfolio along with the company being well-capitalized, positions the group for substantial growth and progression. With approximately 2,000 employees, the company is looking to add a strategic, forward-thinking, hands-on entrepreneurial leader to join the senior management team.  This is a highly visible, critical role for the organization which will lead and oversee the Human Resources function for the organization.  The company is going through an exciting and meaningful period of transformation, and seeks a best-in-class leader to position the company for growth and prominence in the marketplace. This position is based at the company headquarters in the DC-Metro area.


The Head of Human Resources will report directly to the CEO/Owner, who has an excellent reputation and is recognized for being a thoughtful, honest, strategic leader who cares about the long-term success of the organization, its employees, and the communities they serve.  In addition to collaborating and working closely with the senior leadership team and all functional areas of the company, this person will be responsible for the strategy, oversight, and enhancement of the company’s HR department.  Responsibilities include oversight of HR policy/compliance, employee relations, compensation programs, payroll, benefits, HRIS, training/development, talent acquisitions, and internal communications. Compensation: Excellent compensation package including competitive base salary, annual bonus, and meaningful benefits package.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
  • Senior Human Resources Certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive HR experience.  Prior meaningful managerial/executive experience required as this person will have indirect responsibility for 1,800+ employees. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, lead, and interact with a diverse group of employees at all levels of experience.
  • Prior experience in real estate or related service-oriented industry.
  • Deep understanding and up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local labor/employment laws, safety/regulations, and recommended best practices.  Excellent knowledge of compliance, benefits, compensation, payroll, and systems.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit, hands-on, detail-oriented mentality.  Ability to be strategic but also detail-oriented to make sure good decisions are made.
  • Experience dealing with ownership and outside consultants.  The person should have the ability to provide strategy, business solutions in a positive, constructive manner while gaining the confidence and support of senior management and other stakeholders. 
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills.  Given the exposure and visibility this person will have, the successful candidate should have excellent oral and written communications skills, with a combination of an analytical and conceptual mindset. 
  • Collaborative communicator who can foster a positive, forward-thinking culture where employees are elevated to the best of their abilities.
